San Juan Shenanigans

October 15, 2025 by Tamara Winfield |
San Juan

Did you know there’s a tropical island in U.S. territory where you can slow down, sip a piña colada, and soak in that easy island lifestyle — no passport required? Let me take you to San Juan, Puerto Rico.

My family visited back in 2021, when travel was a bit… different. Stores were closed, masks were on, and a negative COVID test was your golden ticket to go anywhere. It wasn’t the perfect time to travel, but honestly, it had its perks — fewer crowds, quiet beaches, and a chance to really experience the local side of San Juan.

🌴 Where We Stayed

We checked into the Embassy Suites, one of my favorites (mostly because of that fresh, made-to-order breakfast!). The pool was massive, complete with a waterfall, and you could order Aussie Bowls right to your lounge chair — yes, please!

Between bursts of tropical rain, we lounged by the pool, relaxed, and enjoyed the beach access just three blocks away from Isla Verde Beach. I love walking anywhere that involves a detour past a cute local coffee shop — and of course, we found one.

The beach was spotless, the water perfectly warm, and the hotel even provided chairs and umbrellas. The beach staff were so friendly, always making sure we were comfortable and happy.

🍴 Food, Flavor & Local Vibes

San Juan’s dining scene felt so personal — maybe because many of the best little restaurants were tucked under people’s homes, right on their patios. It gave every meal a cozy, local charm.

One thing you have to try is mofongo, Puerto Rico’s signature dish. It’s mashed plantains mixed with garlic and pork. I’ll admit, it wasn’t my favorite on its own, but every waiter swore by their own secret sauce and told us to “smother it!” It’s all part of the fun — and the flavor.

🏰 Exploring Old San Juan

You can’t visit without wandering through Old San Juan. Picture giant wooden doors, cobblestone streets, colorful balconies, and umbrellas floating above the alleyways. It’s like stepping into another era.

And here’s a fun fact: the piña colada was born in San Juan in 1954 at the Caribe Hilton! Of course, we had to try the original recipe — and I’ll just say, they’ve definitely perfected it since then. 🍍

💛 Why You’ll Love San Juan

Whether you’re craving beach time, great food, colorful streets, or a dose of history, San Juan delivers it all — with a big smile. The island doesn’t always bounce back instantly after hurricanes, but the people’s warmth and gratitude for visitors is unmatched. They truly go above and beyond to make you feel welcome.

✈️ Ready to Go?

If you’ve been dreaming of turquoise water, palm trees, and friendly faces — all without the hassle of international travel — it’s time to book that trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Pack your sunscreen, bring your sense of adventure, and get ready to fall in love with this little island paradise. 🌞💦
