Experiencing Excursions
It’s no surprise to anyone that I’m a planner. I need to know what’s happening and what to expect — probably because I’m a Libra and decision-making is not my superpower. If there’s a plan, there’s no last-minute panic. Same goes for cruising — for me, excursions are the plan.
We’re always docked in these amazing places with so much to see and so little time! I usually travel with people who like to just step off the ship and see what’s being offered. Maybe it’s cheaper, maybe it’s something new — but for me? My brain short-circuits when I don’t know what’s happening. “Tamara, what sounds good?” they ask. Honestly? Nothing. Actually, everything. Don’t make me choose! 😅
That’s why I love planning ahead. It’s all set. I know where I’m going, what I’m doing, and what to expect. When you’re in a new country, maybe don’t speak the language, and have no clue where you’re going — having someone meet you right off the ship who knows the area (and speaks English!) is priceless. They know their history, their land, and always seem to show me something I never would’ve found on my own. Even if you’ve been somewhere before, booking an excursion can make it feel like a whole new adventure.
How I Book Excursions
Most of the time, I book through the cruise line. Yes, you might pay a little extra, but you’re guaranteed to make it back before the ship leaves — and that peace of mind? Worth every penny. There are also reputable third-party companies like Shore Excursion Group, Viator, and Amstar that offer similar guarantees.
Of course, you can also wait until you get off the ship — you’ll find tons of locals offering tours or day passes. Sometimes you’ll even score a last-minute deal! Just know there’s no official guarantee you’ll make it back before sail-away (though, let’s be real — it’s their livelihood, so they’ll do everything they can not to get a bad reputation).
Places I Wish I’d Planned Something
Oh, the regret! St. John’s, Newfoundland, and Nova Scotia — both on the same cruise. Nova Scotia has such rich history, and we totally missed out. There was an amazing boardwalk right off the ship, though, with plenty of cute shops ready to take my money.
Bermuda, We just went to the beach both days. It was beautiful, but next time I want an island tour — something a little more immersive.
And the Dominican Republic… it’s a fantastic place for a full vacation, but not my favorite stop off a cruise ship. There’s not much nearby, and it’s not the safest area to explore solo.
Excursions I’ve Loved (and Would Totally Do Again)
Grand Cayman – Swimming with the Stingrays:
We hopped on a small boat that took us out past deep blue waters to a sandbar swarming with stingrays. I’m not usually thrilled about seeing what’s swimming around me, but this was incredible.
St. Thomas – Rhumm Tasting:
A quick tour, a history lesson, and then the fun part — tasting! We sampled over 50 different flavors: cotton candy, habanero peach, butterscotch… but the jalapeño lime was my favorite.
Belize – Beach Bliss:
We ended up on a private, secluded beach with soft white sand and massages under palm trees. At the time, we had no idea the world’s second-largest reef was just beyond the sandbar — so now we have to go back!
"What’s Next
Next time I’m in the Dominican Republic, I’m trying something totally different — heading into a local village where ladies from a women owned business are using recyclables to create beautiful new things. We’ll even get to make our own piece alongside them!
Whether you’re a planner like me or a spontaneous “let’s see what happens” traveler, excursions add a whole new layer to your adventure. You’ll learn something new, see the world through local eyes, and maybe even make a few new friends along the way. 🌎💙
