48 hours off? Let's Go!
If I have a weekend off—or even just a couple of days—I am not staying put. My brain instantly goes into “where can I go?” mode. It’s not always far, and it’s not always near, but I love a quick 48-hour adventure. Jump on a plane, explore as much as I can, and then head home with a full camera roll and a happy heart.
When I plan a quick trip, I always start with flights. Where can I go nonstop? Where’s the cheaper route? Sometimes a short layover can even save a little cash. Once I find the flight, I book it—no overthinking.
Packing for 48 Hours
Packing might actually be my favorite part. Since I’m barely touching the ground before I leave again, light is the way to go. A backpack that fits under the seat is perfect.
Here’s my go-to quick trip pack list:
• Two pairs of leggings
• A couple of tees (keep it casual for exploring)
• One dress or a nice pair of jeans for dinner
• PJs and a toothbrush
• Minimal makeup—just mascara and lipstick go a long way
I also toss in my iPad or Kindle for a little reading in the morning or evening—preferably somewhere with a view and a coffee in hand.
Where to Stay
I used to book Airbnbs, but they’ve out priced themselves lately. I’ve learned that while the cheapest hotel might look like a good deal, sometimes it’s not worth the trade-off. Late-night noise, smoky hallways… no thank you. Now I go for something affordable but comfortable, ideally within walking distance of what I want to see.
If there’s a hop-on, hop-off bus tour? You’ll find me hopping on and hopping off! It’s such a great way to get the lay of the land, scope out dinner spots, and see which areas you want to explore more.
My Past 48-Hour Adventures
I’ve done quite a few whirlwind weekends and even helped others plan theirs:
• Salem, Massachusetts – A train ride to all the witchy wonders, then a flight home.
• Portland, Oregon – Coffee, shopping, hiking… and more coffee.
• Scottsdale, Arizona – This is where I learned I’ll always pay more for a good hotel room (and yes, I finally tried avocado toast).
• Omaha, Nebraska – The zoo and a Runzas, every time.
• Las Vegas, Nevada – Do you really need longer than 48 hours there?
• Orlando, Florida – A quick trip to Universal Studios to meet The... The... The... THE Grinch himself.
Why I Love Quick Trips
There are so many places you can visit in 48 hours. Sure, you could stay longer if you have the time and budget—but even if you don’t, a short getaway can still feel like a full vacation. Sometimes, 48 hours is all you need to reset, explore, and come back recharged.
So… are you ready to pack a bag and take off for your own 48-hour adventure?
